Chapter 20

By midweek, things were in high gear at HCM&H. All departments were hiring to accommodate the added billings. When an advertising agency increases its business so suddenly, there is a feeling of urgency everywhere. It's the best of feelings, even though everyone complains about being overworked. Morale could not have been higher at Hunter Caldwell Morrison & Howard.

Mark was settling happily into his job in the mail room and spending whatever free time he could wheedle in the media and research departments, where he was warmly welcomed, in no small measure because he was an eager-to-learn offspring of the founding family. Also, not quite in the line of business, Mark had already taken Erica to lunch and would be seeing her again over the upcoming weekend - or sooner.

Stephie was selected as the model and spokesperson for Miracle Cookware, after Patsy pushed for graphics on the packaging. TV and print were then changed to coordinate with it after Patsy realized Stephie's youthful wholesomeness worked better than any of the several housewife-type models who were in competition for the assignment. Furthermore, “Uncle Andy” Carter had asked Allie to inform Patsy she would get the graphics only if Stephie was selected. It was an easy decision for Patsy.

Brett was back and forth between creative and media, mostly putting out fires, because certain elements of the “Magnificent Seven” program were fighting for budget priority. Media wanted to add network TV. Creative wanted more production dollars for location shooting. And accounting, as always, wanted to keep some money in reserve. All in all, typical problems associated with a big new ad campaign. But Brett had his hands full keeping things moving and people reasonably happy, or at least functioning.

To add to his problems, Allie had avoided Brett for the past day-and-a-half. He needed direction, approvals and confirmations from her on several items, not the least of which were their personal plans for the impending weekend. Saturday had been reserved for Allie - in his mind anyway - to be followed by Ruth on Sunday. Leona was already on deck for Monday night or Tuesday - his choice - but she could be plugged in for Saturday, if Allie tuned him out.

Emerging from yet another meeting, Brett saw Allie go into the larger of the two Carter client offices, by then hers exclusively at the agency. He waited two minutes and then walked in and sat down facing her across the desk.

She didn't look up. “I'm busy.”

“So am I.”

She glanced up quickly, then looked right back down at the papers she was working on. “Look, Brett, I haven't got time for you.”

“Then I'd suggest you make some time available, Ms. Benson, before ‘Magnificent Seven’ ain't so magnificent any more and begins to resemble some of Mr. Carter's four-letter vocabulary.”

“I'm in constant touch with Lew, Patsy and Marty. So I know exactly what's going on.” Then she looked up. “You can stop playing games, Brett.”

He looked at her resolutely. “I'd call you an asshole, but you're a client.
